I grew up in Sacramento, California, which, after living in Chicago, I found some Midwesterners haven't even heard of. It's the capital of California for God's sake. My journalism career began as an undergraduate at Chico State (which even less people have heard of) but it was an experience I wouldn’t change for the world. I received B.A.s in journalism and sociology, as well as the delusion that the “real world” would be even better than college. That soon proved wrong, and a nagging interest in magazines led me to the Medill School of Journalism, where I received my Master’s in journalism. Just for fun, I’m going to say journalism one more time.
I don’t think you can love writing if you don’t love reading. I get my fix through David Sedaris, Jodi Picoult and Sophie Kinsella, along with a slew of magazines from Real Simple to Newsweek to Wired. I still don’t feel like I read enough. I’m a reforming print junkie, and am excited to see what the Web continues to bring to the industry. And to be a part of it. I also love TV, probably way too much. I’d argue it’s equally inspirational, and sadly, knowing who's getting kicked off American Idol or what latest pseudo-celebrity is getting her own show on Bravo makes me feel like I'm on the pulse of things. Pathetic, I realize. I wish I could narrow it down, but I love storytelling in all forms. Fiction, non-fiction, screenplays, magazines, newspapers, the Web, video -- and I think stories can and should be found anywhere.
A few random tidbits: I skipped third grade, was on the gunpoint-facing end of a bank robbery and would die without Diet Dr. Pepper. I’m neurotically organized and a bit of a pansy. I’ve written three pitiful children’s books for the eyes of my niece and nephew only. I respect punctuation, though I really don't like capital letters.
I’m currently pursuing opportunities in writing, editing and Web strategy. Contact me for more.
